The kahuku/monarch butterfly is probably the most well-known in Aotearoa, although it not considered a native. Instead, people all around the country grow milkweed species (e.g. swan plants) for their caterpillars to survive.

Kahuku overwinter as adults, gathering together in the high foliage of evergreens. On warm, sunny winter days they may awake from their state of semi-hibernation to feed, like this one at Ōamaru Public Gardens feeding on jasmine flowers.

Printed in New Zealand on quality card with a matte finish.
