Solo Exhibition: Pīwakawaka Blues

Pīwakawaka Blues: Local Artist Celebrates Our Friendly Fantails Using Historical Cyanotype Process

On display from 17th September to 12th November 2025 at the Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre.

Celebrating the friendly fantail in this solo mini show, “Pīwakawaka Blues”, at the Waikouaiti Coast Heritage Centre, opening September 17th 2025. This exhibition presents an intimate collection of cyanotype prints using my photos of fantails from the East Otago region.

Each work is made using the cyanotype photographic printing process, which uses paper coated with a solution of iron salts, exposed to ultraviolet sunlight, and finally rinsed to fix the print. The images produced are called photograms, or sun prints, and was one of the processes used in early New Zealand photography. The process creates images with a rich Prussian Blue colour, although sepia prints are possible by bleaching and toning with tea, coffee or wine.
