[ON NOW] Solo Exhibition: In Our Backyard

In Our Backyard celebrates the world of birds, insects, and other critters that share our backyards – and beyond. Join us for the opening event at the South Canterbury Museum in Timaru, on Thursday 23rd April 2026.

This exhibition invites you to look more closely at the natural world and the wildlife we share our homes and gardens with, many of them unique to Aotearoa. The artworks also explore different ways of making a photograph, including cyanotypes, and light blur. This exhibition will open your eyes to the abundance and wonder of te taiao, the natural world.

About South Canterbury Museum:

The South Canterbury Museum has a focus on the natural heritage and history of the South Canterbury region of New Zealand – land, life and people.

We collect specimens, artifacts, images, documents and information that can be used to explore the region’s heritage.

Extensive collections are housed in a purpose-built wing where they are catalogued and stored. These collections provide the raw materials for our exhibitions, education programmes, research and other activities.

Work is carried out by a dedicated team of people including fulltime and part-time staff, volunteers and interns.
