Description

Te Kaihīnaki, the Moeraki Boulders are my favourite place to visit in East Otago, and have both cultural and scientific significance. Located along the shore of Koekohe Beach, these unusually spherical boulders are released from the cliffs by coastal erosion.

According to Māori cultural narratives, these boulders are the food baskets that washed ashore from the ancient waka Araiteuru before it capsized further south. Scientific investigation suggests the boulders were formed underwater millions of years ago, made of calcite from circulating water within the mudstone around shell fragments or pebbles, expanding in size over time. Cracks later formed in the boulders and were infilled with calcite crystals – visible as striking patterns on their otherwise smooth surfaces.

These poster prints are a simple way to bring the magic of nature into your everyday, or pop in a frame and gift to a loved one.
