These works are made using the cyanotype photographic printing process, which uses paper coated with a solution of iron salts, exposed to ultraviolet sunlight, and finally rinsed to fix the print. The images produced are called photograms, or sun prints, and was one of the processes used in early New Zealand photography. The process creates images with a rich Prussian Blue colour, although sepia prints are possible by bleaching and toning with tea, coffee or wine.
