Open Edition: “Liothula omnivora”

$220.00

This work is part of the exhibition I found it in the forest, showing at the White Box window gallery in Ōtepoti/Dunedin from 6th March to 17th April. For this collection, I have taken ordinary and otherwise unnoticed objects from our local MTB park and infused them with the magic I see every day in the world around me. [scroll down for more…]

Description

One of my favourite forest finds was a common bag moth (Liothula omnivora) endemic to New Zealand. These moths create beautiful cases, often decorated with parts of their host plant. The female spends her whole life inside her cocoon home. One of its Māori names is pū a Raukatauri, in reference to the atua associated with flute music.

“Hine Raukatauri is best known as the Goddess of Flute Music. It is said that she loved her flute so much that she chose to live inside it.” – Taonga Pūoro
